Donation of CERN computing equipment to GhanathortalaThu, 02/04/2021 - 11:19

Computing equipment donated to the Takoradi Technical University has left CERN on 26 January 2021 for Ghana.

104 servers and five network switches from the CERN Data Centre were donated to the Takoradi Technical University. This donation included more than 2300 processor cores for computing, and more than 1100 terabytes for storage.

The Takoradi Technical University is a technical university in engineering and applied sciences. The donated equipment will be used to set up an infrastructure to support and strengthen the teaching and learning of statistics within its Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, and to provide its students with extensive exposure to statistical programming software and computational procedures. The equipment will also be used by other Departments of the university to train their students, and to propose in-service training courses to statistics professionals in Ghana.

Since 2012, CERN has regularly donated computing equipment that no longer meets its highly specific requirements on efficiency but is still more than adequate for less exacting environments. To date, a total of 2356 servers and 134 network switches have been donated by CERN to countries and international organisations, namely Algeria, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Palestine, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal, Serbia, and the SESAME laboratory in Jordan.
