CERN publishes its first F-Gas Policy

CERN has recently published a Fluorinated Gases (F-Gas) Policy. This policy formalises CERN’s commitment and strategy to minimise the impact on the environment of its installations containing and activities using F-Gases, thereby contributing to reducing its direct (Scope 1) greenhouse gas emissions.

Greenhouse gas emissions at CERN arise from the operation of the Laboratory’s research facilities. The majority of emissions come from CERN’s core experiments and more than 78% are a direct result of the use of F-Gases. With climate change a growing concern, the Organization is engaged in reducing its direct greenhouse gas emissions, one of the key pillars of its commitment to environmentally responsible research.

The policy will be implemented through a variety of measures ranging from an efficient management and monitoring of the procurement and use of F-gases to appropriate training of personnel concerned and proactive communication to stakeholders.
